As president Trump toured areas impacted by natural disasters in California and North Carolina last week he was less than kind in his evaluation of FEMA, the federal organization tasked with helping residents who have been displaced recover and rebuild: “disappointing”, “bureaucratic”, “slow”. That feedback, coupled with his casual mentions of making FEMA go away meant it wasn’t particularly shocking when a new executive order to form a council with the task of assessing the efficacy of FEMA appeared later that day. While FEMA hasn’t been dismantled (yet), the efforts to reduce federal spending may hamper the agency’s ability to support individual disaster recovery efforts in the near future.
