ORDER

(Law Enforcement, Military Activity, National Security)

There have been no overt declarations of martial law (as was anticipated by some), but the Trump administration has been aggressive in its use of the military to resolve domestic issues:

The Department of Homeland Security has created two separate Military zones near the border (one in New Mexico, one in Texas). While the military isn’t normally allowed to intervene in domestic affairs, designating these areas as military zones allows them to participate in immigration enforcement and directly engage people attempting to cross the border. There are also signs that the military presence at the border may be in preparation for more direct engagement with Mexican cartels. Trump recently extended an offer to directly engage drug cartels which Mexico’s president Sheinbaum rejected.

And, while the Trump administration has yet to invoke the insurrection act, buried deep in an executive order which was on its face about extending additional legal protections to law enforcement is a section directing the Attorney General and Secretary of Defense to examine how extra military assets (tools and equipment), training, and personnel can be used to prevent crime.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

If you cross the border regularly (work, family, dual citizenship), be aware of potential delays or detainment protocols now managed by active-duty forces
If you live in a city receiving federal law enforcement support, monitor changes in policing tactics or surveillance practices
