SAFETY

(Environmental Hazards, Extreme Weather, Civil Unrest, Crime)

The Trump administration first signaled its desire to restructure the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in early January, arguing that states should take more responsibility for the costs associated with disaster response. Since then both Republican and Democratic governors in multiple states have reported being denied FEMA aid needed to handle recovery efforts. The list includes North Carolina Governor Josh Stein (D), West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey (R), Washington Governor Bob Ferguson (D), and Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R). And, on 08 May, the acting director of FEMA was replaced the day after he gave testimony at a hearing that dismantling the agency would not be “in the best interest of the American people”.

FEMA is also revoking funds already allocated to projects, and intends to end the practice of canvasing (going door to door to speak with survivors) after natural disasters.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  • If you live in a disaster-prone area, review local or private assistance programs now.

  • Review your renters or homeowners insurance to make sure disaster coverage is included
