As the end of the fiscal year approaches lawmakers in the US have turned their attention to the issue of the 2026 budget. A proposal by the Trump administration includes approximately 163B (Billion) in cuts, most of which impact non-defense expenses related to food, housing, and research. Per Government Executive “A senior OMB official said excluding areas the Trump administration set aside for bumps, agencies would see on average a 35% reduction.” Cuts that deep are likely to significantly impact the function of many of these agencies. Kash Patel, handpicked by Trump to run the FBI, has explicitly said his organization “can’t do the mission” on the budget the Trump administration proposed. Congress is not required to adopt the President’s budget as-is, it is a rough outline intended to guide legislators through the draft making process. Even so, the Trump administration is intent on achieving its fiscal goals, and has said it may not spend additional funds approved by congress. The impact of the proposed cuts on each state will be different: in California affordable housing and services for the homeless are particularly vulnerable, Cuts to the EPA will impact water infrastructure updates in Wisconsin, and some states will experience challenges on multiple fronts like Maryland where housing assistance, heating assistance and clean water are at risk. |
The Real ID requirement for domestic travel by airplane went into effect yesterday, on Wednesday May 7th. While the TSA seems to be easing into the requirement, expect that attempting to travel without Real ID will result in delays and additional screening. |
