SAFETY

(Environmental hazards, Extreme Weather, Civil Unrest, Crime)

Among the agencies that were targeted by DOGE for headcount reduction was the FAA where many positions held by non-ATC (air traffic controllers) were cut in spite of recent collisions. This included workers responsible for maintenance, inspections, information specialists, and others who one former air traffic controller described as people who “maintain every piece of equipment that keeps flying safe, from the radars to the ILS, to ATC automation.

Even Musk, who ostensibly performed these cuts with the aim of improving the FAA’s performance, considers the state of air traffic safety to be “extremely dire” and says it is “single digit months to catastrophic failure”. He hopes to remedy the situation by transitioning FAA communication systems over to Starlink, a process which is likely to produce its own hiccups (not desirable where the safety of air travel is involved).

NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association), also shrunk when DOGE eliminated personnel late in February. The agency, which produces daily weather forecasts and tracks natural disaster risks “sort of gets forgotten, until it’s very important, and as we officially enter tornado season in the US recent cuts may make it more difficult for NOAA to provide timely and accurate information about extreme weather events which will impact both public safety and travel.

ACTION ITEMS:

  • If You Are Concerned About The Safety Of Air Travel, Consider Alternatives (Car, Bus, Train, Boat) Where They Exist

  • If You Live In A Region Of The Country At Risk Of Extreme Weather Events (Tornados, Hurricanes, Flooding, etc.)

    • Create An Evacuation Plan Than Can Be Implemented On Short Notice

    • Prep For Longer Disaster Response Times Caused By Information Delays
