ORDER
(Law Enforcement, Military Activity, National Security)
It’s been clear since his first visit to the border that security would be a top issue for Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth. He has echoed the sentiment of President Trump with regard to the necessity of subduing cartels and controlling illegal immigration. When asked if US troops would enter Mexico he declined to rule it out ("all options are on the table”) which is consistent with his private statements to Mexican officials. A few days before his 31 January visit he reportedly ended a call with representatives of the Mexican government by saying that “if Mexico didn’t deal with the collusion between the country’s government and drug cartels, the U.S. military was prepared to take unilateral action”. A month later he seems prepared to make good on that promise since - as reported by the Department of Defence - more active duty troops including a stryker brigade combat team have been sent to the southern border. While there has always been a military presence at the US/Mexico border, this appears to be part of a shift in the kind of military officer being deployed. It also represents a significant increase in US border presence. Prior to Trump’s inauguration there were reportedly 2500 troops at the border. This stryker unit, in addition to the 1600 troops who were ordered there on 22 January, represents a more than 3x increase. |
