ORDER
(Law Enforcement, Military Activity, National Security)
Among the new administration's top priorities is rapidly deporting the 11 million undocumented immigrants currently in the United States. To that end the Trump administration has rescinded a policy that prevented ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) from making arrests in schools, hospitals, and churches, and imposed quotas to ensure each field office makes a minimum number of arrests each day. The external pressure to increase the rate of deportations has reportedly led to mistakes that resulted in US Citizens being detained during searches that were conducted without a warrant. This is particularly concerning given that the Laken Riley Act (signed into law by President Trump on 29 January) requires “the federal detention of illegal immigrants who are accused of theft, burglary, assaulting a law enforcement officer, and any crime that causes death or serious bodily injury.” The Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristy Noem, also announced the revocation of special protections that allowed about 600,000 Venezuelans to remain in the country legally until October of 2026. Now that those protections have been removed, many of them will face the risk of deportation as soon as April of this year; others can remain in the country until September. |
