On 21 January the acting Secretary of The Department of Health and Human Services demanded an immediate (but temporary) pause to all external communication including“regulations, guidance, announcements, press releases, social media posts and website posts”, and placed further restrictions on travel and meetings. This announcement negatively impacts the Center For Disease Control (CDC), the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and National Institute of Health which is the “largest single public funder of biomedical and behavioral research in the world”. While there may be some exceptions for critical health and safety issues any exceptions will be subject to review. Several days later, On 27 January, a senior official with the CDC announced an immediate end to its partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), effectively stopping the flow of information between federal agencies, global health organizations, and the general public. The timing of the restrictions placed on the CDC and FDA is especially unfortunate given the growing risks associated with Bird Flu (H5N1). While it hasn’t yet become a significant risk to human health it is a concern for those with pets and, per the USDA, has impacted 17.8 Million birds raised as poultry within the last 30 days. It was also just reported that a different (not new) Bird Flu variant - H5N9 - has been linked to an outbreak that occurred in November. |
